Cliffside was built around the old Cliffside Mills complex near the Rutherford-Cleveland county line, and the housing that grew up with it sits on small mill-village lots, many laid out in tight rows with a shared alley or a short bank behind them. Kudzu on a lot like this usually isn't a wide field problem, it's a narrow one: a bank behind a row of houses, a fence between two small yards, an old outbuilding at the back of the property that hasn't been touched in years.

Cliffside Fire & Rescue is one of the volunteer departments the Rutherford County Fire Marshal's office lists for this part of the county, with a P.O. Box address right in Cliffside itself. The community sits mostly on the Rutherford side of the Cleveland County line, close enough to it that a handful of the properties we quote here straddle both counties. Because the village sits close to the Second Broad River, several of the lots we quote back up to a steep bank down toward the water, and kudzu on that bank behaves more like the gorge-wall jobs we do near Lake Lure than like open farmland.
